Very soon after the construction of the wet dock a competition was held for the design of a new Custom House, the winner being J. M. Clark, a local architect who died in 1849 at the age of only thirty-six.

The wet dock was formally opened in 1842, and the imposing new Custom House was opened with due ceremony three years later.
